Blythe’s Highway 601 Project Already a Success: Serious accidents down 67% and no fatalities in the work zone
November 5th, 2009After two years of construction, the Highway 601 project is achieving the N.C. Department of Transportation’s and Blythe Construction, Inc’s safety goals.
Blythe Construction wanted no fatalities and fewer serious accidents during construction of the 11 mile stretch of highway. And two years into the project, these goals are being reached!
The NC Department of Transportation’s accident statistics show no fatal accidents. The number of injuries requiring hospitalization has been reduced by an annual 67 percent compared to the five years immediately prior to construction. Heavy vehicle accidents have been reduced by 68 percent.
How did we do it?
Blythe Construction implemented the N.C. Department of Transportation’s proposed new 2010 work zone traffic control procedures and asked for help from the local sheriff’s department. They increased patrols and maintained a very visible presence during lane closures and traffic switches. Cooperative efforts by the N.C. Department of Transportation Resident Engineer Dennis Cloud and Blythe Construction Project Manger Wayne Ramsey ensured they met their desired results by using innovative ways to reduce risks in the active work zone.
